Present Position of Radiotherapy in the Treatment of Malignant Disease of the Pelvis
نویسنده
چکیده
For the purposes of this paper the term ' radiotherapy ' will be used to cover the established methods of treatment by radium and X-rays. Recent advances in nuclear physics and apparatus construction may materially alter radiotherapy as we know it today by placing in the hands of radiotherapists artificial radioactive substances and machines capable of delivering beams of neutrons, electrons and X-rays of energies varying from ten to hundreds of millions of volts. The potentialities of these new weapons are as yet relatively unexplored and time must elapse before their value in the treatment of cancer can be assessed. The group of malignant neoplasms of most direct interest and concern to the gynaecologist comprises the cancers arising from the uterus, the ovary, the vulva, the vagina and urethra in order of frequency of occurrence. Radiotherapy is of considerable value as a palliative -agent in the treatment of inoperable tumours arising from all these sites and as a preor post-operative measure, it forms a valuable adjunct to the surgical treatment of cancer of the corpus uteri, the ovary and the vulva. A reasonable claim can be made for radiotherapy as a curative agent in the treatment of cancer of the cervix uteri, vagina and urethra and as such it can be employed in preference to surgery for most' operable tumours of these sites. As the grounds upon which these claims are based are still subject to differences of opinion a clear picture of the present position of radiotherapy in the treatment of pelvic malignanm disease can only be obtained by the separate consideration of all the neoplasms concerneZl.

Successful treatment of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor by surgical resection and radiotherapy: A case report
Background: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a tumor composed of myofibroblasts and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate that rarely undergoes malignant transformation. The most common sites of involvement include the lung, liver and orbit, but it has been reported to occur in nearly every site of the body, including oral cavity and soft tissue. Although common in other sites, such a tumo...
متن کاملPeripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor of the Pelvis
The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) belongs to a group of highly malignant tumors and is composed of small round cells of a neuroectodermal origin. Categorized in the same tumor family as Ewing sarcoma, the PNET is most likely to occur in bones and soft tissues. However, a small number of PNET cases arising in the pelvis have been reported as well. We present three cases of pelvic PNET: ...

متن کاملPoint Dose Measurement for Verification of Treatment Planning System using an Indigenous Heterogeneous Pelvis Phantom for Clarkson, Convolution, Superposition, and Fast Superposition Algorithms
Background: Nowadays, advanced radiotherapy equipment includes algorithms to calculate dose. The verification of the calculated doses is important to achieve accurate results. Mostly homogeneous dosimetric phantoms are available commercially which do not mimic the actual patient anatomy; therefore, an indigenous heterogeneous pelvic phantom mimicking actual human pelvic region has been used to ...

Background: The relationship of the base of appendix to the cecum remains constant, whereas the tip can be found in a retrocecal, pelvic, subcecal, preileal, or right pericolic position. These anatomic considerations have significant clinical importance in the context of acute appendicitis. The knowledge about the correct anatomical position of appendix may facilitate in generating an accurate ...
